CEREMONIES

Medieval knights were inducted into the Order of Knighthood in an elaborate ceremony. Each Round Table of Young Knights and Maids of Errantry is encouraged to develop its own ceremonies. The following are suggestions of ceremonies which should be conducted by full Knights Errant. The terms Knight Errant and Knights of Errantry are understood to include both men and women.

INDUCTION INTO THE ORDER OF PAGE

Those being inducted as pages shall come forward one at a time, as their names are called. They shall bear in their hands an open notebook in which nothing has ever been written.

The Knight Errant shall say to each, by name, "___________, are you wlling to become a Page in the Order of the Knights of Errantry, seeking always to do what is right without recognition or benefit?"

The Page shall answer, "I am."

The Knight Errant shall then say, "This open book is the book of your life. In it, you will write your thoughts and actions, and these shall determine what sort of person you will become. With God's help, the writings of your life shall be admirable. May you persevere in your task and may you grow into the person whom God has created you to be."

The Knight Errant shall then give the Page a pen with these words, "Record in this book your daily good deeds. May you grow in justice as you do them."

The Page shall reply, "With God's help, may it be so."

The Knight Errant shall then give the Page a Young Knight Errant Wallet card with these words, "May you uphold the oath on this card all the days of your life."

The Page shall read the oath and state, "This I shall do." He or she shall then return to his or her place in the gathering.

INDUCTION INTO THE ORDER OF SQUIRE

The Knight Errant conducting the ceremony shall call forward by name those being inducted into the Order of Squire, using these or similar words, "__________________, are you willing to be inducted into the Order of Squire in the Knights of Errantry, seeking to serve all, but most especially those younger than you, exemplifying all the virtues of the Knights Errant?"

The Squire shall reply, "With God's help, I am."

The Knight Errant shall then present to each Squire an empty mug, with these words, "Our Lord Jesus Christ stated that even giving a cup of cold water to the least among us is giving to Him. May you always do good to others and most especially to those most in need."

The Squire shall reply, "With God's help, I shall."

The Knight Errant shall then give the Squire a Young Knight Errant Wallet card with these words, "May you uphold the oath on this card all the days of your life."

The Squire shall read the oath and state, "This I shall do." He or she shall then return to his or her place in the gathering.

INDUCTION INTO THE ORDER OF YOUNG KNIGHTS OF MATER DEI

The Knight Errant shall call forward by name those being inducted into the Order of Young Knights of Mater Dei, using these or similar words, "_________________, are you willing to be inducted into the Order of Young Knights of Mater Dei, seeking to assist those older than you and working with those younger, so as to advance the causes of goodness and justice wherever you may be, always seeking to foster in yourself the values and virtues exhibited by the Mater Dei, the Mother of Jesus?"

The Squire shall reply, "With God's grace, I am."

The Knight Errant shall then present the Young Knight of Mater Dei with an embroidered crest, saying, "Receive this crest. Wear it proudly, remembering always that you are to uphold the truth, goodness, and justice for which it stands."

The Young Knight of Mater Dei shall answer, "With the help of God, I will."

The Knight Errant then hands the Young Knight of Mater Dei a wallet card containing the oath which the Young Knight of Mater Dei shall read. The Knight Errant shall then say, "Live this oath always."

The Young Knight of Mater Dei shall reply, "With God's help, I will." He or she then returns to his or her place.

INDUCTION INTO THE ORDER OF THE KNIGHTS OF ERRANTRY

Those about to be inducted into the Order of the Knights of Errantry shall approximate the pattern followed by medieval knights.

The Ceremony of Induction shall be held at a special gathering of the Knights and their families.

The night before the induction, those about to be inducted into the Knights of Errantry shall bathe as a symbol of their desire for purity.

They shall spend at least one hour in prayer and quiet meditation on the night preceding their induction, during which they will seriously consider the oath they are about to take and asking God to help them in keeping it.

For the ceremony of induction, those about to be inducted shall be clothed all in white.

The Knight conducting the ceremony shall call them forth by name in these or similar words, "_______________, come forward and state your request."

The one desiring Knighthood shall reply, "I desire to be inducted into the Knights of Errantry so as to live the oath of for the rest of my life, in humility and obscurity, doing good to all without need of recognition or recompense."

The presiding Knight shall respond, "So be it."

The aspiring Knight shall then kneel and the presider shall, with a drawn sword or, in the abscence of a sword, with his or her own hands, dub him or her on each shoulder and on the head, saying these words, "In the name of Saint Michael and of Saint George, I dub you a Knight Errant in the service of God and of your fellow human beings. May you serve well and with honor all the days of your life."

The newly dubbed Knight Errant shall then read the Oath of Errantry.

The presiding Knight shall respond, "As a reminder that you are to live this oath all the days of your life, receive this your own personal crest and treat it with honor always. Your crest is a symbol of the virtue which you exemplify and the virtue which you must develop. These virtues are to be your protection and your trademark. May you live them well." The presider shall then present the new Knight of Erranty his or her own personal crest. The crest may be presented as an embroidered patch, as a wall shield, as part of a garment, or in any other way suitable to the new Knight of Errantry.

The new Knight shall then rise and be greeted with applause by those present.

Following the ceremony, a collation or meal should take place in a festive manner as a sign of celebration.
